ServSafe vs StateFoodSafety vs 360training: Which Certification Is Right for You?

Published June 2026  |  8 min read

If you need a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification, you have several nationally accredited options to choose from. The three most popular are ServSafe (from the National Restaurant Association), StateFoodSafety, and 360training. All three are ANAB-CFP accredited, meaning they're legally accepted in every state that requires a food manager certification. But they differ significantly in cost, format, study materials, and the overall experience.

This guide breaks down each program honestly so you can pick the one that fits your schedule, budget, and learning style.

What All Three Programs Have in Common

Before getting into differences, it helps to know what's the same across all three:

  • All are ANAB-CFP accredited — the gold standard for food manager certification
  • All cover the same core content: foodborne illness, temperature control, personal hygiene, cross-contamination, cleaning and sanitizing, and pest control
  • All exams consist of approximately 80 questions with a passing score of 75% or higher
  • All certifications are valid for 5 years
  • All are accepted in all 50 states that require CFPM certification

ServSafe — The Industry Standard

ServSafe is the most widely recognized food safety certification in the United States. Produced by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF), it has been the dominant program for decades and is what most health inspectors expect to see.

Cost

ServSafe pricing is somewhat unusual — the exam itself is relatively inexpensive (~$36 for the online proctored exam) but the study materials are sold separately. A full course-plus-exam bundle typically runs $150–$185. Many employers pay for ServSafe specifically because it's the most recognized brand.

Format Options

ServSafe offers the most flexibility in how you study and test:

  • Online self-paced course — study at your own pace, take the exam online with remote proctoring
  • In-person classes — instructor-led sessions available through ServSafe-certified proctors nationwide. These typically run 1–2 days.
  • Exam-only — if you already know the material, you can register for just the exam

Pass Rate and Difficulty

ServSafe's exam is widely considered the most rigorous of the three. The questions are more scenario-based and require applying food safety knowledge rather than just recalling facts. First-time pass rates without preparation are roughly 60–65%. With the full course, most candidates pass on the first attempt.

Best For

ServSafe is the best choice if your employer requires it specifically, if you work in a large chain restaurant that uses ServSafe training systemwide, or if you want the most universally recognized credential on your resume.

StateFoodSafety — The Online-First Option

StateFoodSafety is a Utah-based company that has grown significantly over the past decade by focusing on a clean, modern online learning experience. It's a fully online program — there are no in-person options.

Cost

StateFoodSafety bundles the course and exam together for approximately $99–$149, depending on your state and any promotional pricing. This all-in price makes it more transparent than ServSafe's à la carte model.

Format

Entirely online and self-paced. The course uses interactive lessons, videos, and knowledge checks throughout. The exam is administered online with remote proctoring through a webcam. The course typically takes 8–12 hours to complete, though you can spread it across multiple sessions.

Pass Rate and Difficulty

StateFoodSafety's exam is generally considered slightly more straightforward than ServSafe's, with more direct recall questions and fewer complex scenarios. First-time pass rates tend to be slightly higher. The course content is thorough and well-organized, making it genuinely effective preparation.

Best For

StateFoodSafety is the best choice if you learn well online, want a lower all-in cost, or need to complete everything at your own pace without scheduling around an in-person class. It's particularly popular with independent restaurant owners, food truck operators, and cottage food producers.

360training — The Budget Option

360training is a large online learning company that offers food manager certification as part of a broader catalog of professional training courses. Their ANAB-CFP accredited food manager program is called "Learn2Serve Food Manager Certification."

Cost

360training is typically the most affordable option, with course-plus-exam bundles often running $79–$99. They frequently offer promotional discounts that can bring the price even lower.

Format

Fully online and self-paced. The course interface is functional but less polished than StateFoodSafety's. The exam is proctored online. Course completion typically takes 8–15 hours depending on your pace.

Pass Rate and Difficulty

360training's exam is ANAB-CFP accredited and covers the same material as the others. The course preparation is adequate, though some users find the interface less engaging than competing platforms. Pass rates are comparable to StateFoodSafety when candidates complete the full course.

Best For

360training is the best choice if budget is the primary concern and you're a self-motivated learner who doesn't need a premium interface to stay engaged. It's a fully legitimate certification at a lower price point.

Which One Should You Choose?

Here's a simple decision framework:

  • Your employer requires ServSafe specifically → Choose ServSafe
  • You want the most recognized credential → Choose ServSafe
  • You want the best balance of cost and quality → Choose StateFoodSafety
  • Budget is the top priority → Choose 360training
  • You prefer in-person learning → Choose ServSafe (only option with in-person classes)
  • You're an independent operator or cottage food producer → StateFoodSafety or 360training
Bottom line: All three certifications are legally equivalent and accepted everywhere. The "best" one is whichever you'll actually complete and pass. Don't overthink it — pick one and get certified.

What About Other Providers?

Other ANAB-CFP accredited providers include the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals (NRFSP), Prometric, and FoodSafePal. These are all legitimate options as well. The five programs listed on our Approved Providers page represent the most widely used and accessible options nationally.

No matter which program you choose, the certification you receive carries the same legal weight. What matters most is that you understand the material — food safety knowledge protects your customers, your employees, and your business.
